'Rokugatsu en nishiki' is an interesting variegated Japanese maple that was named and introduced in Shizuoka, Japan in 1988. 'Rokugatsu en nishiki' leafs out bronze in the early spring. As the leaves mature, they reveal bright pink and white variegation. 'Rokugatsu en nishiki' may get 12 ft in height in 10 years. Fall color can range from yellow to red. I recommend protection from the hot afternoon sun for best variegation, along with a late spring pruning. In late February, or right as the buds begin to swell in your area, lightly prune your 'Rokugatsu en nishiki'. This will increase the amount of variegation across the tree dramatically. If continued pruning happens each year, you may also get pink and white spiraling in the bark providing an extra winter interest.
