‘Red Spray’ is nice red upright Japanese maple with a brighter red spring color. For brighter spring colors, make sure to give ‘Red Spray’ plenty of sunlight. Early summer, ‘Red Spray’ turns more maroon, getting some green-red colors into it by late summer. The fall color on ‘Red Spray’ is a bright crimson red. ‘Red Spray’ has a nice upright shape reaching 12-14 ft in height in 10 years. “Red Spray” was originally a marketing term by Gary Handy for a batch of red seedlings that had good red color. One of these “Red Spray” was planted at our gardens on Maplewood Knoll, at the entrance way. The color is outstanding and much brighter spring red color than similar cultivars. We began to graft ‘Red Spray’ and it became the cultivar.
